‘Angry Birds Stella’ Hopes You Really Like Birds

Remember Angry Birds? Before Flappy Bird came along, it was one of the biggest mobile games in the world, and still commands an enormous audience. But the new entry, Angry Birds Stella is a wee bit of a hint that Rovio is running out of ideas.

Why? Well, the main twist seems to be that all the birds this time are female, building off of Stella. Yep. That’s it, according to CVG:

“Stella may be pink, but she’s definitely one of the Angry Birds, a fierce and a feisty character with a great group of friends. Of course no story is complete without some interesting (fr)enemies!

Angry Birds Stella will debut in fall 2014, and will encapsulate “games, animations, books, toys and other fun stuff”.

True, Rovio has seemingly been in this position before, and then they delivered the surprisingly high-quality game Angry Birds Space. That used gravity effects in interesting ways. This, however, seems largely stuck on the selling point of a bird being pink to move copies.

It’s not a bad physics-based puzzler, but come on, guys: That’s like trying to argue Mrs. Pacman’s bow introduced new and dynamic game mechanics. Hopefully there’s a bit more to it than that: We’ll find out this fall.
