Ashley Madison Is Offering A $500,000 Reward For Information On Hackers

The fallout from the Ashley Madison hack, which outed millions of adulterers (most of whom live in São Paulo), continues. Late last week, the hackers themselves, known as the Impact Team, spoke to Vice about why they did what they did and how easy it was. To that second point, they said, “Nobody was watching. No security.” As for the first: They claim “human trafficking,” but also:

Their writings also suggest they were equally outraged at the company’s privacy and security claims. In their initial manifesto, they wrote: “Trevor [Stokes], [Avid Life Media’s] CTO once said, ‘Protection of personal information’ was his biggest ‘critical success factors’ and ‘I would hate to see our systems hacked and/or the leak of personal information.’” (Via Wired)

The latest update is that Avid Life Media, which runs Ashley Madison, is offering a $500,000 reward for any information leading to the “identification, arrest, and prosecution” of the Impact Team hackers. They’re working with the Toronto Police Department.

Police also said in a press conference today that there have been “two unconfirmed reports of suicides” due to the hack; there’s also a fair amount of extortion going on. If you have any information, call the Canadian Crime Stoppers Association at 1-800-222-8477.
