On July 1, 1997, B.G.’s It’s All on U, Vol. 1 debuted on Cash Money Records. This was during the pre-Universal days, when the label was still a local outfit. If Lil Wayne kept the company afloat during lean times in 2000s, B.G., along with Juvenile, helped the ship first launch. Except now, he’s been relegated to a footnote after splitting from the label, dealing with drug addiction and being thrown behind bars on a 14-year bid on a weapons charge.
Before all of that, B.G. was the first CMR act who caught my ear and that all began with “Cash Money N****z,” featuring Big Tymers, Turk and early Hot Boys member Bulletproof. The rhythmic keys and rhymes filled with local color regarding their Uptown stomping grounds went on to become very familiar elements over time. But, everything has a starting place and It’s All On U was part of the early foundation for the house Birdman built.
