Your Daily Funk – Bobby Womack’s “Across 110th Street”

The other day, I caught the second half of American Gangster in syndication and enjoyed the it thoroughly, as I hadn’t seen the background on Blue Magic since theaters. But, beyond heads being brutally bashed in pianos and T.I. portraying a teenager, the thing that stuck in my head the most after walking away was Bobby Womack’s extremely righteous “Across 110th St.”

Fiery and packed to the brim with pent-up emotion, this telling tale from the ageless singer effectively uses a slapping soul backdrop to reiterate the difficulties of growing up in the shadows of affluent neighbors – a theme which unfortunately reigns true for even more people today than it did back when the track was first featured on the 1972 soundtrack of the same name.
