Browns Trying To Lock Down Brian Hoyer

With Brian Hoyer heading into the final year of his contract in 2014, the Browns are reportedly trying to lock down the quarterback to an extension prior to the start of the season. That’s bound to elicit some “ooohhh the team doesn’t believe in glory boy Johnny Manziel” reactions from the more daring members of the trolling sports take crowd, though unless the Browns inexplicably give Hoyer a $50 million deal, that’s definitely not the case.

The sensible takeaway is that it’s pretty important to have a dependable backup, especially when your starting quarterback has a playing style that opens himself up to as much contact as Manziel does. It’s understandable to feel like this might be bittersweet for Hoyer. After spending a few years sitting behind Tom Brady before bouncing around teams, he finally got a chance to start and actually did pretty well before being felled by an ugly injury. Perhaps if circumstances were different, Hoyer might’ve gotten a chance to be a starter with another struggling team, though for a player of his experience and output getting decent back-up money, a secure job and the possibility to have an occasional fill-in start isn’t bad.
