‘Buzzkill #1’ And Other Comics Of Note, September 18th

What if “beer muscles” were a real superpower? What if being an addict made you a superhero? And what if you decided, for the health and safety of others… that you had to quit? That’s the premise of Buzzkill, a superhero comic that’s brilliantly unique right out of the gate. A review, and a look at comics from DC, Marvel, Dark Horse, Valiant, and IDW, under the jump.

“Ruben”, our “hero”, goes to his first meeting, and… it doesn’t go well, in Donny Cates’ clever script. Ruben is an addict, and if you’ve ever dealt with an addict, Ruben goes through pretty much every stage of dragging an addict to a meeting. Ruben anchors the book because he’s not a good guy, but he realizes that and he’s trying to get it back together. Needless to say, though, there are some pretty serious complications involved, that we won’t spoil here.

Geoff Shaw’s art is pretty much perfect. Shaw has a wonderful sense of place, whether that place is a burned out city or the meeting room in a church, and his art is both gritty and cartoony enough to carry the hard parts and make the comedic parts funnier.

This is a book you have to pick up: It’s a clever take on superheroics and absolutely worth reading. But what about the other books this week?

<!–pagetitle:Zero #1–>

Ales Kot’s story deals with a rather scary idea: Cyborgs in the Middle East conflict, and the idea of a new modification arms race. It’s a very focused, gory, violent, dark opening to an intriguing book; it may not be to everyone’s taste, but it’s a superb launch.

<!–pagetitle:Kiss Me, Satan! #1–>

Victor Gischler hands in a fairly conventional script about werewolves, vampires, fallen angels, and witches, set against a backdrop of New Orleans. Juan Ferreyra’s art is quite well done and gives the book a more light-hearted feel that it needs to work, but ultimately, if you choose to skip this, so far you’re not missing much.

After a rather rocky and dull first issue, this second one is actually a lot zippier and more entertaining. It’s still a bit generic, but it’s improving rapidly, and now I want to read issue three.

<!–pagetitle:Batman Beyond Universe #2–>

Christos Gage and Kyle Higgins tell two very different, and very fun, stories set in the Batman Beyond universe. Seriously worth reading just for Superman’s crusade to get some dating advice.

<!–pagetitle:Infinity #3–>

Jonathan Hickman’s sprawling Marvel opus continues, and continues to be great. The interthreaded plotlines of this book really click both as part of a work and on their own terms. Whether you’re a Marvel fan or a Hickman fan, this is the book to get.

<!–pagetitle:Batman ’66 #3–>

This book arguably hits a great stride with this issue, with Jeff Parker writing a Joker story reinventing some newer characters, like ’66 Harley Quinn, while telling the story in a way that fits in with the “rules.” And the second story, featuring Egghead, really has to be read for Egghead’s post deathtrap monologue. In all, a fun, all-ages comic with some great talent behind it: Get it for kids who like Batman, or get it for yourself, for a breather.

<!–pagetitle:Dream Thief #5–>

A highly satisfying finale to Jai Nitz and Greg Smallwood’s limited series. The best part? The series will continue, and the collected edition arrives next March. If you haven’t been reading this, dig it out; it’s the best mix of noir, superheroes, and the supernatural on the stands.

<!–pagetitle:Justice League Of America #7.3: Shadow Thief–>

Tom DeFalco and Chad Hardin offer a surprisingly morally complex take on a fairly minor villain, as these things go. By the end of it, you know two things: Shadow Thief is one scary human being… and not, perhaps, entirely in the wrong. A real surprise and one of my favorites, so far, from Villains Month.

<!–pagetitle:Bloodshot And The H.A.R.D. Corps #14–>

Christos Gage and Joshua Dysart have a lot of fun with an interesting concept. H.A.R.D. Corps is a ragtag team even by cliche standards; good thing they’ve got Bloodshot… oh, wait, no, Bloodshot’s who they’re rescuing. This book is fun, snarky, and fast-paced; pretty much a perfect read for action fans.

<!–pagetitle:Harbinger #16–>

Joshua Dysart and Barry Kitson take a chainsaw to idiotic macho power fantasies and it… is… brilliant. The book itself is actually well-written and once again, Faith proves to be the touching heart of this team. So come for the satire, stay for the great writing.

Robert Venditti’s continuing arc is actually very clever in how sensible it is: It’s a fish-out-of-water story with a practical focus. And, needless to say, Aric is in the process of screwing it all up. This is something different, and in comics, that can be rare; worth reading.

<!–pagetitle:Swamp Thing #23.1: Arcane–>

Charles Soule’s look at what makes Anton Arcane tick starts with probably its most disturbing pages, but it’s a strong issue with a creepy end, and announces that Soule can really deliver the horror goods. Perhaps more for fans of Swampy than a wider audience, but it’s a good standalone story.

<!–pagetitle:Wonder Woman #23.1: Cheetah–>

Mostly this is interesting for reintroducing the Golden Age Manhunter to the DCU, which fans of Kate Spencer may not approve of. But John Ostrander is enjoying himself, and this origin makes way more sense than anything Cheetah’s had so far. So, there’s that.

<!–pagetitle:Justice League Dark 23.2: Eclipso–>

Dan DiDio tries, but he can’t really make Eclipso that interesting, as a villain. Not bad but not particularly engaging, either.

<!–pagetitle:Justice League #23.3: Dial E–>

China Mieville’s gloriously bizarre and off-kilter superhero book gets a rousing send-off, courtesy of a whole stable of artists with one tackling each page. It’s a nice tribute to a weird book, and definitely one worth reading.

<!–pagetitle:Batman: The Dark Knight #23.3: Clayface–>

John Layman and Cliff Richards explore just what makes Clayface tick. Turns out being an impulsive shapeshifter with rage issues isn’t the best combination! This is one of the more detailed and engaging stories out of Villains Month so far, and definitely worth a look.

<!–pagetitle:Superman #23.3: H’El–>

Scott Lobdell finally gives this new villain a little more depth and something more interesting, leading into a rather intriguing new arc. Also, Dan Jurgens on pencils makes the kid who grew up reading Supes in the ’90s smile, every time.

<!–pagetitle:Green Lantern #23.3: Black Hand–>

Mostly this explores the illness that is Black Hand, but there are some truly jolting moments in this, as well as one hilariously dark joke about police preparation, courtesy of Charles Soule. Worth reading for GL fans.

<!–pagetitle:Batman and Robin #23.3: Ra’s Al Ghul–>

The Secret Society tries to recurit Ra’s Al Ghul. You get no points for guessing how, precisely, that goes, but James Tynion IV and Jeremy Haun have a lot of fun exploring the history of a man who has lived a thousand years… and been a bastard-coated bastard for nearly all of them.

<!–pagetitle:Batman #23.3: Penguin–>

Frank Tieri tells a short story about Oswald Cobblepot getting his hands dirty. Very, very dirty. Helped substantially by Christian Duce’s art, it’s a dark, self-contained noir about manipulation and just how soulless Cobblepot really is.

<!–pagetitle:Batman: Detective Comics #23.3: Scarecrow–>

Peter Tomasi is stuck doing set-up for Forever Evil: Arkham War, so there’s a limit to what he can really do with this book. But he still has some fun with Scarecrow along the way, and Szymon Kudranski is pretty much perfect for this book, art-wise.

Conan #20: Brian Wood continues to be one of the best writers in comics; this mix of horror, action, and fantasy is a must buy.

The Strain: The Fall #3: Fun enough, but wait for the inevitable movie.

BPRD #111: This arc, Lake of Fire, is really at its best in the small moments, like Liz Sherman goofing around with her roommate. The arc is pretty good, and worth picking up for fans.
