Just in time for Memorial Day, the holiday which honors the brave men and women who died while serving our country, Carl’s Jr. and Hardee’s are rolling out the “The Most American Thickburger” on May 20. The Most American Thickburger consists of a 1/3 pound hamburger patty topped with American cheese and a split hot dog over a layer of kettle-cooked Lay’s chips.

But what reasoning — what logic — could Carl’s Jr. and Hardee’s possibly use to justify putting a hot dog on top of a hamburger? ABC News has the answer:

“The hot dog is like a smoked meat product, so it’s not unlike bacon,” said Brad Haley, chief marketing officer of CKE Restaurants, the owner of Carl’s Jr. and Hardee’s.

“We’ve had this idea, believe it or not, for a long time,” Haley said.

Welp, that clears that up. The Most American Thickburger will set you back $5.79 by itself or $8.29 for a combo. If that’s too rich for your blood, or you don’t live near any Carl’s Jr. or Hardee’s locations, you could just as easily assemble one of these on your own at a Memorial Day picnic. It doesn’t count unless you sing the National Anthem while you’re eating it, though.
