We usually joke around and refer to Cleveland as “the factory of sadness” but today the city’s giving us so many smiles. Ten years ago, three Cleveland girls – Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight – all went missing and their families and investigators assumed the worst after so much time had passed.

That was until this morning when the girls were found alive – along with a six-year-old girl – by Charles Ramsey. The four females had been held in a house near downtown Cleveland where Berry and two other women who vanished a decade ago. Authorities later arrested three brothers in connection with the case.

Along with another neighbor, Ramsey helped the captives escape the home where they had been held. Instantly, Ramsey became a hero and the local news sought him to hear how the daring rescue happened. An apparent master of narrative tales, Charles Ramsey explains every single detail related to the rescue.

“I heard screaming. I’m eating my McDonald’s and I come outside, and I see this girl going nuts trying to get out her house. So I go on the porch and she says ‘Help me get out, I been out here a long time.’ So I figure it’s a domestic violence dispute, so I open the door and we can’t get in that way…So we kick the bottom, and she comes out with a little girl, and she says ‘Call 911, my name is Amanda Berry . . . When she told me it didn’t register until I got to call 911. And I’m like, ‘I’m calling 911 for Amanda Berry? I thought this girl was dead…Bro, I knew something was wrong when a little pretty White girl ran into a Black man’s arms.'”

Reading it will do nothing for you, so we suggest watching Ramsey’s recount the events in the video below. We’re talking facial expressions, wit and more make it priceless, in the tradition of Antoine Dodson and Sweet Brown.

Congratulations, Charles. Today, you’re the nation’s hero.

Update: The remix version – with the Big Mac portion of the anecdote included. Thanks Stay Frosty.
