Chicago Sidewalk’s Cover Of Kendrick Lamar’s “Don’t Kill My Vibe” Is Groovy

Since Kendrick was the flavor of the moment earlier this week, let’s focus on something a tad different from Compton’s golden boy.

Quiet as kept, Erykah Badu’s live rendition of “Bitch, Don’t Kill My Vibe” at last year’s BET Awards remains a personal standout version of the record for a laundry list of reasons not worth covering right now. Recently, pianist Charlie Coffeen and drummer Tyler Namberg, both members of Chicago Sidewalk – along with singer Angele Anise let loose of their effort. The only gnawing aspect is Anise saying “bitch.” Lord knows I have a potty mouth at times and whenever the song comes on censoring myself is the least of my concerns. Yet, hearing it here failed to fit the overwhelming hypnotic vibe of the cover.

Aside from that, job well done. Each time hearing this, I always feel as if I need to be in a hole-wall-in-the-wall jazz bar drinking whiskey straight while smoking a cigar in a tailored suit. That’s a good thing. I swear.
