There Was Plenty Of Trickery Surrounding Chris Rock’s Oscars Girl Scout Cookies Money

So much was made about Chris Rock raising a little change for his daughter’s Girl Scout troop at Sunday’s Oscars. It was a cool moment that got some of the stars in attendance to open their pockets and buy some delicious cookies, but reports after the event put the final total into question. TMZ ran with reports that the actual total collected on the floor of theater was much lower than the $65,000 touted on the stage:

A Girl Scout rep tells us they sold around 500 boxes of cookies at $5 a pop. That comes to $2,500 … far short of the Oscar tote board revealing a grand total of $65,243.

But then, an official statement from The Girl Scouts corrected this report and noted that the total on the stage was correct. It just didn’t reflect everything that was raised on the floor with the cookies:

“Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles was thrilled to participate in the 88th Oscars on Sunday evening,” the statement said. “Both Girl Scouts of the USA and the Academy have verified that, through sales of Girl Scout Cookies and donations made during the Oscars, the Girl Scouts raised $65,243 that will benefit girls, allowing them to improve their communities and continue developing into strong leaders.”

And yeah, Chris Rock’s daughters might not have been involved. His daughter’s troop is based out of New York and the money raised at the awards went to help a troop out of Inglewood, California. But the rivalry with Linda Dunn is very real for Rock. Access Hollywood caught up with Dunn, a friend of Rock and his ex-wife in New York, and she called it a personal throwdown:

Dunn remained sporting about the whole thing. “You can’t buy that type of publicity for the Girl Scouts,” she said. “That was a wonderful thing that he did.”

I think out of all of this, we found out that celebrities actually carry cash on their person. Seeing some of those greenbacks fly out during the segment was a lot more surprising than the total at the end.
