A City Councillor In North Carolina Resigned In The Nerdiest Way Possible

There are few things nerdier than learning a made-up language from a TV show or book. The reality is, speaking Elvish isn’t much of a career builder. But David Waddell made use of his knowledge of Klingon… by filing a resignation letter, right down to using the proper font.

Waddell is part of the Indian Trail City Council until the end of the month, apparently because people just don’t observe the old traditions and fight to the death over internal political disputes anymore. But that didn’t stop him from getting a parting shot in, according to the Charlotte Observer:

“Folks don’t know what to think of me half the time,” said Waddell, so “I might as well have one last laugh” on the board. [Mayor Michael] Alvarez called the letter childish and unprofessional. “It’s an embarrassment for Indian Trail, and it’s an embarrassment for North Carolina,” he said.

For those curious, here’s the letter reproduced in full, with translation. My Klingon is non-existent, but, hey, seems legit:

Waddell actually had a good reason for quitting; he was trying to keep public records accessible, and the city council was voting to hike the costs. For those wondering what’s next for Waddell, he’s resigning because he thinks he can be more effective at city council meetings by showing up as a private citizen, and also he’s trying to mount a write-in campaign to challenge Kay Hagan for her seat as a member of the Constitution Party.

So, yeah, this is the most attention he will ever receive in his political career. But, hey, at least he went out on a high note.
