‘Daredevil,’ ‘The Strain,’ And Other Comics Of Note, August 20th

Daredevil has to find his mom in the least hospitable place on Earth. And that’s not his only problem, either. Here are reviews of selected books from DC, Marvel, Image, Dark Horse, Boom! Studios, IDW Publishing, and Dynamite.

The Multiversity #1

Grant Morrison is unleashed on the DC multiverse, and he has an almost ridiculous amount of fun with it. This is a comic that has a cameo appearance from obscure former JLI member Bloodwynd, it’s that gleeful in its meta nature and self-referential parody. It’s very, very weird, and that’s really just how we like Morrison.

The Fade Out #1

Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips are breaking with tradition and making a light-hearted romantic comedy. Just kidding, it’s totally another noir series. And… eh, it’s OK. Honestly, Brubaker’s doing better work elsewhere with Image, and this is yet another story about the dark side of ’40s Hollywood. Not bad, but it’s hard to see this going anywhere we haven’t been.

Dark Horse Presents #1

The anthology book relaunches and, honestly, it’s pretty hit and miss. Brendan McCarthy’s entry is trippy mostly for the sake of being trippy, and David Mack’s Kabuki is, well, it’s the same thing it’s always been. But there’s a new Resident Alien story, so that’s good, and Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti’s story of a UFC fighter punching demons is promising, if suddenly cut off.

The Strain: The Night Eternal #1

I’m not sure what it is about this book, but I’ve just never gotten into it, and at this point, it feels more overly elaborate than anything else. David Lapham tries mightily, but he’s tied a little too closely to a multimedia franchise to really cut loose the way we know he can. If you’ve been reading, this’ll be for you, but everyone else is better off starting at the beginning.

Hellraiser: Bestiary #1

An anthology book starring, you guessed it, the Hellraiser himself. Honestly, they’re of varying quality. The first story is just a pile of mindless gore, the second is actually a pretty interesting take on how the worshippers of the Cenobites might handle their lives off the clock, and the third is part one of a far more interesting story about somebody who wants Pinhead’s pins. All of them. So it’s middling, I suppose, but fun enough if you’re a fan of the series.

The Delinquents #1

Archer and Armstrong meet Quantum and Woody? Surely nothing could possibly going wrong squaring those two off against each other, right?

Yeah, we feel bad for Archer and Quantum too. But this book is as hilarious as the concept promises, even if James Asmus and Fred Van Lente together… well, let’s say they’re not the most subtle of writers individually, and here it’s front and center. But still, the book’s more than funny enough to make up for it, and highly recommended.

Super-Secret Crisis War: The Grim Adventures Of Billy And Mandy

Kate Leth and Troy Little bring back a Cartoon Network classic for IDW’s hilariously silly epic crossover. And… well, let’s just say it sticks to the tone of the cartoon, including a hilarious reference no child should actually get. Worth a read if you’re liking the crossover.

Justice, Inc. #1

Pulp heroes the Shadow, Doc Savage, and the Avenger team up to, well, you can read the title. Honestly, Michael Uslan’s script is a little too wink-and-nudge for my tastes; H.G. Wells and Einstein appear in the first few pages. Similarly, Giovanni Timpano’s art is just too generic and poorly researched to make the book compelling. A cool idea but a weak execution.

Steampunk Battlestar Galactica #1

Yeah. The title tells you what you need to know about this book, and it’s pretty much where any creativity stops.

Teen Titans #2

Will Pfiffer shows off Bunker as a character, and seems to be making him the focus of the book. And that’s a good thing; Pfiffer has made Bunker vastly more interesting in two issues than the entire last run of the Titans. Also Kenneth Rocafort drawing Beast Boy imitating Grumpy Cat is just adorable.

Black Market #2

Frank Barbiere and Victor Santos continue their story of humans dissecting superhumans for the biological secrets inside them, but it’s more of a character study about a good man in a bad situation. Like it says in the opening, a bad decision is a chain reaction. And this is getting to be a fairly interesting set of events, especially as the “heroes” are somewhat less than noble. Definitely a solid read, and worth picking up if you like your noir with some costumes.

Armor Hunters: Bloodshot #2

Bloodshot puts boot to ass in this Armor Hunters crossover, and frankly, twenty-two pages of action is always welcome. Perhaps not the most profound book on the stands this week, but certainly one of the most fun.

Armor Hunters: Harbinger #2

Mexico City was completely nuked over the course of this crossover, but the Armor Hunters, being dicks, left behind a nasty little present. Guess who gets to deal with it? It’s a fairly fun book, but more for those following the crossover than anyone else.

Infinity Man And The Forever People #3

This book is a throwback and honestly… it could stand to be less of one. I’ve got a huge affection for Kirby’s space hippies, but Keith Giffen, Dan DiDio, and Jim Starlin on pencils (!) just won’t vary things up enough to make this concept interesting. I know this is driven by DiDio, who is an enormous Kirby fanboy, and I actually enjoyed OMAC, but it’s time to let this concept go. It was of its time, and its time has passed.

Eye of Newt #3

Telling instead of showing can be a cardinal sin in a comic book, and here it happens within the first couple of pages. Michael Hague’s retelling of the Arthurian legend is gorgeous, but it’s a bit stiff and clumsy in the writing, and that hurts it a bit.

Sir Edward Grey, Witchfinder: The Mysteries Of Unland #3

Kim Newman and Maura McHugh continue their genteel Lovecraftian story, with Tyler Crook on art. The book is a bit slow-moving, but it’s got a very English bent to it, especially with the use of eels, which are always creepy. A fun read, although one paced for the trade.

The Empty Man #3

Cullen Bunn’s Lovecraftian police procedural continues, and it’s finally developing a little narrative steam. If nothing else, this story of the FBI trying to track down a cult worshipping a virus that may be something far more sinister is unique, and Vanessa Del Rey’s art and layout work is superb. Worth a read for horror fans.

Brain Boy: The Men From G.E.S.T.A.L.T. #4

There’s a lot going on here at once, but Fred Van Lente juggles it well and also helps bring into focus the overarching theme of the Black Sky line of books, which, really, took you guys long enough! But, as always, it’s a fun and funny action book, and well worth picking up.

Original Sins #5

The anchor of this anthology issue is, literally, all talk between the Young Avengers. But this is almost worth the money just for Chip Zdarksy grinding through the dark secrets of the entire Marvel Universe in the back, one of the funniest two-pagers out of Marvel in recent memory, and there’s a moment between an aging Nick Fury and Dum Dum Dugan that’s a great moment of character and drama. So two out of three makes this one definitely a buy.

The Saviors #5

On paper, the idea that you have to get high to use a death ray on space aliens sounds incredibly stupid. As a comic, James Robinson and J. Bone make it not only not seem goofy, but make it incredibly tense, a clever riff on a horror premise. Highly recommended.

Translucid #5

Claudio Sanchez and Chondra Echert continue their dive into a vigilante’s screwed up psyche, but once again it’s Daniel Bayless’ art and Adam Metcalfe’s color work that make this book. Bayless has been handing in a tour-de-force of art here, and Metcalfe’s clever, vivid color work makes it pop. Pretty to look at, and interesting to read, albeit possibly one to wait for the trade on.

Ms. Marvel #7

Wolverine and Kamala have a learning moment. Honestly, I was hesitant about Wolvie being featured in this book, but G. Willow Wilson incorporates Wolverine well, and makes him an effective mentor without making it cheesy. Also, it ends on a promise of Kamala getting a new and amusingly unwelcome sidekick that makes me hugely excited for issue #8. Highly recommended!

Daredevil #7

Daredevil goes to Wakanda to rescue his mother, and… well… there’s a lot of issues to be worked through. This issue is both great and a bit clumsy, great in that we see just how brilliant Matt Murdock is as a legal and strategic mind, and clumsy in that the message about postpartum depression, while important, is laid on a bit thick. Still, a superb issue as always, and highly recommended.

B.P.R.D. #122

The BPRD goes to Japan just in time for… well, it’s a book about giant monsters and it’s set in Japan. Take a guess what’s being set up here. Joe Querio takes over on art and is superb, with a real joy in giant monsters. Definitely one of the more entertaining reads, and a good jumping on point if you want to start reading about the Hellboy universe.
