Darren Aronofsky’s Comic Book Plot Pays Off: $150 Million ‘Noah’ Moving Forward

Back in January we reported Darren Aronofsky was making a comic book based on a script he was having trouble financing because, in

Our speculation turned out to be right; Aronofsky collaborated with Nico Henrichon on a Noah comic. Aronofsky also turned out to be right; after trying to get Noah funded for at least four years, the comic helped him pen a deal with Paramount and New Regency to produce the movie with a $150 million budget. Aronofsky has been writing about Noah since he was 13 years old, when he won a United Nations poetry competition for a poem about the end of the world told from Noah’s perspective. The Noah script by Aronofsky and Ari Handel is now being reworked by someone who is actually a good choice to rework an epic story, John Logan (Gladiator, The Aviator).

Christian Bale has been rumored as the top choice to play Noah but is not currently attached to the project.

In September 2008 we talked to Aronofsky about his idea for a film based on Noah: “It’s the end of the world and it’s the second most famous ship after the Titanic. So I’m not sure why any studio won’t want to make it,” said Aronofsky. “I think it’s really timely because it’s about environmental apocalypse which is the biggest theme, for me, right now for what’s going on on this planet.” [/film]

Aronofsky has also told TheGuardian:

Noah was the first person to plant vineyards and drink wine and get drunk. It’s there in the Bible – it was one of the first things he did when he reached land. There was some real survivor’s guilt going on there. He’s a dark, complicated character.

In fairness to Noah, getting drunk is also the first thing we do after departing or ship, or while docking a ship, or while on the ship, or while on land. Wine is awesome. Thanks, Noah.
