De La Soul Ft. The Spirit of the Wu – “Get Away”

As they promised last week, De La Soul delivers their first single in years, “Get Away,” featuring “The Spirit of the Wu.” The record picks up where DJ Maseo began the convo in recent interviews, essentially criticizing the monotony found in today’s version of rap.

So what does the Strong Island trio offer with their newest? The same sound and vibe that got them through the first 25 years honestly. They choose a cavernous beat, a sample of RZA’s words on Wu-Forever’s second disc – both elements making up Clan reference in the title – and then they go into detail, doing things the De La way as always. The Plugs made their mark in music by being far from center or “far away from the norm” as Pos puts it. Their impetus for “Get Away” appears to be their reminder for today’s artists to break away from the cookie-cutter mold. That’s probably the best way to make a two decade career from rap, or any form of music for that matter.

“Get Away” will be on De La Soul’s next project, You’re Welcome, due later this year.
