Two Mentally Disabled Teens Were Named Homecoming Queen This Year

If there’s one thing the millennial generation can take credit for, it’s letting someone new take the spotlight for a little while, especially people who have felt like they’ve been kept from it. Two schools have let a couple of girls who aren’t traditional candidates for homecoming queen take the crown and their stories are really making the rounds.

In West Virginia, high school senior Kendra Hager, was nominated by her class to be the homecoming queen at St. Albans High School. Hager, who has Down Syndrome, is a cheerleader at her school and runs with a group of friends who make sure to treat her as an equal.  That’s why they threw their friend Kendra’s name into the ring. When she heard about the nomination, she told them that she wouldn’t be upset if she didn’t win since she’d still be part of the homecoming court and take part in the parade. That’s how you do gracious!

And then, she won! According to her mother, Kendra “hasn’t let the crown out of her sight” since her victory. Above, you can see her at the homecoming dance with her king.

In Tennessee, another mentally disabled teen named Maureen (her last name isn’t mentioned) also ran for homecoming queen of her school. But in her case, Maureen was really gunning for it, running a full-on campaign at Roane County High School in Kingston. And she also won!

Congratulations, ladies! Here’s to living the teenage dream, which belongs to anyone who wants it!
