I’m feeling somewhat lethargic about typing out the 5Ws related to this one so allow the press release to be the guide.

“Entrepreneur and musician, Dom Kennedy will release his seventh studio album Get Home Safely on October 15th via his own imprint The Other People’s Money Company with a digital pre-order set for October 1st. The completely independent album will feature the recently released lead video, “South Central Love.”

“The 16-track opus is largely produced by the Los Angeles based production duo, The Futuristiks, who have collaborated with Kennedy on past releases, and DJ and frequent collaborator DrewByrd as well as additional production from 1500 or Nothin’ and the legendary DJ Khalil. In addition to featured verses from Nipsey Hussle, Krondon and Los Angeles emcee Skeme, Get Home Safely also features vocals from TeeFlii. Get Home Safely follows last year’s free online release, The Yellow Album, which spawned the radio single “My Type Of Party.” This release, however, will be sold at digital retailers beginning with a pre-order on October 1st and is also Kennedy’s first album to be sold at the major retailer, Best Buy.”

The reason I saved my energy was to tie in LA Weekly’s recent coverage of Dom where they discuss his ability to wear two hats: one as artist, the other as businessman. The situation isn’t uncommon by any means, as many artists have to take on dual (and really more) roles to support their careers as independents.

What impressed me the most was the reminder that Dom’s only had one album go to retail — 2011’s From the Westside, With Love II — and the only reason he charged for it was to help put cash in his pocket since he had a seed on the way. The other five projects he’s released in the past four years? All free mostly because Dom just wanted to rhyme. As he puts it, “I never wanted nothing from rap up until now. That’s how naive but how pure my vision and my heart was for what I’m doing.” In order to do that, he admits to making sacrifices along the lines of living with family, resorting to pushing a bike to the studio because his license was suspended and dining on the best dollar menu values he could find.

Get Home Safely will be available at Best Buy, which sounds commonplace, until we’re again reminded that Dom’s indie and Best Buy is about as corporate as company can get. The fact that Dom and his manager and OPM parter Archie Davis were able to get the album on the retail behemoth’s store shelves is nothing short of admirable, a testament to their ability to wear those different caps and do so successfully. They’re not the first to do it, but they’re definitely one of the select few we’ve been able to follow closely so there’s a lot of “Get a load of this guy. Go, Dom, go!” as we watch their story continue to develop.

With those things said, GHS goes to stores on October 15th. Check the tracklist below.
