Donald Glover Raps, Doesn’t Suck

It’s got to be difficult for Donald Glover to be taken seriously as a rapper. He’s one of the most hilarious guys on television right now as Troy on Community. But Childish Gambino is a talented spitter.

The first single, “Freaks and Geeks” is very “A Milli” meets “Ransom” with Gambino ferociously attacking the track. Lots of similes and metaphors – with one too many references to his d*ck – but all is forgiven for dropping an e.e. cummings reference and saying, “took the G out yo’ waffle, all you got left is yo’ ego”.

Bravo, good sir.

But I wonder if his career is going to get a fair shake. I remember how hard it was for people not to immediately start laughing every time Jamie Foxx sat behind his piano regardless of how much talent he had. My first inclination when watching this video is to laugh at Donald running around the warehouse like the special kid at recess you tried to avoid because he’s throw the football over the fence for the f*ck of it. But when all of that is out of the way, Gambino knows his way around a beat and his comedy background works well for his punchlines (“yes your booty’s big as hers, say that to my white b*tch”).

When I heard that Glover was rapping, I didn’t think I’d ever end up saying this: Childish Gambino is dope music. His EP drops on March 8. Give it a try.

If you’re interested, here’s his unique tour where he’ll be doing stand-up and rapping. Remember when Katt Williams was trying that for a while? Yeah, that sucked. This probably won’t. He won’t be coming anywhere near me, so come back with some feedback on how the show is.
