An increasingly unhinged Donald Trump — once again being distanced from the Republican party following his statements on banning Muslims from entering the United States — appeared on Good Morning America Tuesday morning, where he did not help his case. When asked by host George Stephanopoulos if the comparisons to Adolph Hitler he was now earning himself “gave him any pause,” Trump went off on a rant that must be heard to be believed.
No, because what I’m doing is no different than what FDR [sic]. FDR’s solutions for Germans, Italians, Japanese, you know, many years ago… [Stephanopoulos: “So, you’re for internment camps?”] This is a president who was highly respected by all… he did the same thing, if you look at what he was doing. It was far worse. He was talking about the Germans, because we’re at war. We are now at war. We have a president who doesn’t want to say that, but we are now at war.
It should be noted that during this whole thing, George Stephanopoulos made this face:

GMA
When pressed, Trump went on to say that he doesn’t want to bring back FDR’s policies on immigrants and that he “doesn’t like doing it at all,” but temporary measures were needed until our “grossly incompetent representatives can figure out what’s going on.”
So, in a nutshell, Donald Trump does not compare himself to Hitler, but to FDR who he says was much worse than Hitler. There you have it, folks.
Henry Ford comparisons didn’t phase Hitler either, so there’s that…
In Trumps defense, FDR also totally locked up an entire race of people and pretty much let them sit there and die while the rest of the country stole all their shit. He didn’t actively kill the Japanese, but at this point I’m not sure if that’s better or worse. Hell, at least Hitler had the balls to own his insanity and ride it to the end.
So as much as I also think Trump is a maniac, he’s right. Liberals are all A OK with FDR’s extremes in a time of national crisis that took us off of the gold standard leading to insane inflation and committed genocide against Japanese-Americans. You’re ok with Obama taxing the working middle class into poverty to pay for insurance and major amenities for people who NEVER intend to work a day in their life. Your good with him literally pan searing the Middle East in ISIS controlled oil, then saying that climate change is a major concern of his. You guys all gobble up Bernie Sander’s psycho-socialist BS non-stop. But a conservative gets a little extreme (with liberal precedence) to solve an issue and they’re Hitler. Wow…
Are liberals really ‘ok’ with internment camps? Really? Have you taken a poll in this?
FDR committed genocide against Japanese-Americans? Yet, in your first paragraph you say “he didn’t actively kill the Japanese.” Either you have a short memory or you grossly misunderstand the word “genocide.”
There’s nothing to “wow” about here, man. Trump went very extreme and is out of control. Even the fellow GOP candidates are calling him “unhinged” and a whole host of other things.
Most liberals are A-ok with how FDR and the New Deal went into effect. I personally do not ascribe to “liberal” beliefs and believe the New Deal, going off the gold standard, etc. was absolutely the worst thing that ever happened in this country. Well except for slavery and maybe 9/11 … that shit was pretty bad.
Bernie Sanders absolutely, 100% terrifies the shit out of me. I am very, very afraid of what would happen if he became President. Granted, not AS afraid as if Trump were to be, but still very afraid. Mostly for my family’s economic stability if Sanders gets the nod. Free college for everyone? Jesus. Kill me now.
“Wow” is certainly right. That was utter fucking nonsense.
Well, I can’t speak on a greater scale, of course – but I don’t know a single person that has defended FDR’s treatment of Japanese nationals, and I know a lot of people who fully recognize it as one of the darkest chapters in US history.
FDR did a lot of great things, but he also made one of the most fucked up decision that a president has ever done. So please don’t try to spin this narrative that “the libruls think the Japanese interments were great just because a democrat did it!”. That’s crazy, and I’d say that the sheer evil of that act is one of the few most things repubs and dems can agree on.
And it’s not like FDR was the sole reason it happened. There was wide support for the move throughout the country, and the supreme court itself upheld the system.
Lastly, even the reparations in the 80’s had bipartisan support. The seeds of it were planted by Jimmy Carter, and the civil liberties act was signed into law by Reagan. The bill itself was cosponsored by a democrat and a republican. Even though the majority of republicans in the house vote against it – 63 yes vs. 98 opposed – a plurality of republicans senators voted in favor at 25 vs 20.
Like any neo-con…you always miss the point. It’s not your fault…you have been programmed to see things through a red lens. You don’t know how to think…function…feel, if it doesn’t include vile hate and anger towards anything you deem liberal. You support gun laws…even when it so clear and evident that it’s getting out of control. You support Donald Trump…even when he starts talking about interment camps. This is how they want you to be. You can’t think clearly. You can’t make heads or tails of anything…because all you see is…us versus them.
You see Obama taxing the middle class…and you blame the poor. Please be advised…the poor isn’t getting rich off of welfare. Don’t look to see what pocket the money is coming out of…look for where it ends up. You really think Democrats are thinking about the poor when they champion Food Stamps? Think about where our tax dollars end up. Who produces this food that is being federally subsidized? Oh. Oh. OH. Who makes money off of federally mandating every has to have insurance? Oh. Oh. OH. While we are at it…let’s tackle the Middle East. You really think the whole reason we are over there is to protect us from the big bad evil Muslim invader? Or are we just protecting Saudi and corporate oil interests while at the same time giving our buddies in the defense industry a merry xmas? Oh. Oh. OH.
Like I said…it isn’t your fault. You have been taught by the powers that be…to think A and B are the only ways of thinking…and A is the gospel truth…and B is full of shit and will kill us all. C is not an option. Because C is the real answer. If everyone in the country quit squabbling over right versus left…they would see it’s not right versus left. It’s us versus them. We no longer live in a Democracy. We live in a Oligarchy. This country needs a Bolshevic Revolution.
@underdog1 Convenient how when it’s a democrat they “just mad one bad decision” but a bad decision from a Republican makes them a hateful bigot. So until you get that, stop making arguments like they are the gospel truth.
@The American Dream funny you mention not being able to think right with all the liberals on here responding that B is the gospel truth, A is bullshit and there is no option C.
I do support reform in firearm purchasing laws, but not the crazy shit spewing out of the radical left.
I do not support Trump, I was thinking with a whole-world, historical perspective (like you say I could never do) and actually reading the words that came out of his mouth. Yes he’s radical, but so is Obama. To you, it’s OK when Obama is radical but not a conservative. Who can’t think right yet?
Actually, HUD dwellers ARE doing very well off of our tax dollars. You see the poor and only see homeless and starving. Welfare isn’t going to them. It’s going to pay to keep a family of 6 in a 76 degree public housing unit all winter while mom and dad watch their 55″ TV, then take a cruise in their 2014 SUV with 22’s. I design renovations for HUD on a daily basis, so I see it. You probably have never seen it and are talking out of your ass. But I still can’t think right…
I don’t disagree with anything you said on the Middle East. My only additive thought is that we should stop f**king around, pave it and take the oil.
I’m not sure who this “they” is that you think has programmed me, but it’s frickin hilarious that you think as a conservative I am the only one susceptible to having my thought process swayed by politics, and my way of thinking is completely wrong while you, the “enlightened liberal” have not been affected in your way of thinking by any outside sources and you are totally free and clear to see the only right way of thinking.
Lastly, we certainly do not live in a democracy, you are correct. But suggesting a communist revolution is the final nail in the coffin of you trying to act like you aren’t a nut job left wing radical drunkenly screaming at a painting of Ronald Reagan…
“I do support reform in firearm purchasing laws, but not the crazy shit spewing out of the radical left.” – And what exactly is that “crazy shit?” I’ve yet to hear ANYONE and I mean, even on Facebook or Twitter call for CRAZY gun laws to be enacted. You’re reaching a lot here, man.
We certainly are closer to a democracy than most countries are though. If Trump had his way though, we’d either be a theocracy or dictatorship.
You keep moving the goalposts in your conversations here though. Skirting around the issue at hand—which is that Trump is a bigoted, racist, homophobic, misogynistic ass clown who has zero understanding of how to be tactful, respectful, diplomatic, and most importantly, Presidential.
If FDR made several disparaging comments about several different races, he would also fall into the ‘hateful bigot’ claim that Trump so proudly wears like one of his pageant sashes. Still waiting on that poll where liberals agree with internment camps . . . let alone the blatant disregard for actual history knowledge where both sides voted for the internment bill and Supreme Court judges on both sides upheld it . . .
@tdk8709
Who built those HUD homes? Who built that SUV, the TV? You still fail to see the point. You yourself make money on HUD homes. It’s not that complicated. If there wasn’t any money in welfare and entitlement…it would never happen. It’s why FDR did the New Deal to begin with. He knew it would make a shit on of people rich…himself included. He was dead right. And by the way…my wife grew up in HUD homes and I grew up on the bad side of town. I know a lot about HUD homes and the people who live in them. They aren’t getting rich.
We all know who “they” are. What is an Oligarchy? A rule by a small group of people. We are being ruled by the super wealthy. It’s not even hidden anymore. And they want you to think it’s liberal versus conservative. It’s how they keep everyone in the dark. It’s ruse. See…even know you assume I’m a liberal. I’ve been a Republican since I was 18. But…I do not allow every thought in my head to be some Republican trope. Life is too complicated to be disseminated into two different ideologies. It’s a bit more complex than that. I never said you were wrong…just misguided.
What was the Bolshevik Revolution? Was it a Marxist uprising? Of course it was. That’s painfully obvious. But…just like everything else…there was a much more deeper meaning that goes outside of the whole republicans versus democrats thing. Kind of illustrates why you’re way of thinking is dangerous. Labeling the Bolshevik Revolution as this Liberal bloodbath is misleading. It was the downtrodden people of Russia displacing an Oligarchy that ruled them without regard for their lives. They took back their country. I’m sorry if it hurts your delicate sensibilities…but this country could use a nice Bolshevik Revolution. The ruling class has had it good for way too long. Time to drag them out in the streets, and make examples out of all of them. I know you could never agree to such action…because…my goodness…what would Reince Priebus think? What would Karl Rove think? Oh they wouldn’t like that at all. Neither would their masters.
Someone watched The Dark Knight Rises one too many times…. and no, seeing as I make enough money to have a couple cars, feed my kids, live in a 3 bedroom house that looks decent, I know that the type of psychotic revolution you want to insight would end in my death because I would appear to be “wealthy” to the blood thirsty mob just because I qualify for a mortgage and had a down payment. It could end up in your inadvertent death as well, but as is usual with liberals, you never think about the actual consequences of you actions, you just have your hand out and want everything now at whatever cost.
Also, please do remind me again on how that whole Russian revolution thing worked out for the general populace? Oh, they’re all equally wealthy now and experience no oppression, poverty, homophobic political policies or war mongering? Good to hear!!
It’s not like “conservatives” were out there protesting FDR’s use of internment camps in WWII. No one was that I’ve ever heard of. It was in retrospect a terrible mistake. That’s pretty much the entire point. To progress as a society, we need to learn from past mistakes. Isn’t that pretty simple? It’s funny on the one hand hearing Trump supporters support internment and race-based immigration policies while pretending the cry about FDR.
There is plenty of historical revisionism on both sides, but wingnuts on the right are particularly galling in their attempts to rewrite the past based purely on whether or not someone was a Democrat.
Regardless, internment based on race is morally wrong. How are we even debating this in 2015?
@tdk8709 not for nothing but the average American citizen making 50k per year spends approximately $36 annually for the SNAP program. That same American spends nearly $6500 a year in corporate welfare.
Yes welfare is a major problem, but not the welfare you’re thinking of.
” You’re ok with Obama taxing the working middle class into poverty”
that statement completely contradicts reality supported by facts. the reality is that wages are stagnant while the greatest redistribution of wealth to the rich has gone on for at least the last 30 years. remember when mitt said that 47% of people pay no income tax whatsoever. that says to me that the republicans have succeeded in reducing taxes for nearly half the population of workers.
the reality is that wages are stagnant while the greatest redistribution of wealth to the rich has gone on for at least the last 30 years…that says to me that the republicans have succeeded in reducing taxes for nearly half the population of workers.
Republicans deserve alot of blame for this, but don’t pretend the Democrats are innocent. They’ve favored policies that flood the job market with millions of low-skilled immigrants willing to work for low salaries, which obviously lower the wages of American workers.
Democrats win because they can import more left-wing voters, and Republicans win because their corporate donors are paying less in salary to their labor.
The only losers are the American middle class. Who, as you correctly pointed out, have seen their wages stagnate.
Ha ha ha, I clicked on a Trump article here. I guess I deserved this. Got me!
Unhinged? No, he’s knows exactly what’s he’s doing. And, by appearing to care more about political correctness than national security, the media is playing right into his hands.
His proposal is obviously an extreme overreaction, but I’m grateful he’s pushing the Overton Window way to the right on this issue. The last thing this country needs is a large, unassimilated Muslim fifth column like Western Europe has.
“Unhinged” = “I don’t agree with”
