Your Daily Funk – Donny Hathaway’s “Someday We’ll All Be Free”

It’s funny how music and life’s transitional periods often coincide. Through nothing more than the power of Donny Hathaway’s music and passion, both have repeatedly served as teachings in placing perspective on my own personal journey.

Hathaway was on to something when he guaranteed “Someday We’ll All Be Free.” Free is a process, more than an end goal. With the way the world operates even in 2013 – from senseless violence, politics becoming a dirtier game by second and blackface paintings continuing to be all the rage – comes the truth society will always be an environment testing the limits of dignity and sanity. Ignorance is the cologne of the misinformed.

Yet, realizing we’re all not guaranteed to see 80-years-old, being free takes on the additional meaning of achieving personal goals and striving towards the life we imagine. Because at the end of the day, what else is there?

Such are the thoughts brought forth by a song from an artist who took his own life seven years before mine began.
