DOOMSTARKS (Ghostface Killah & DOOM) – “Victory Laps”

Show of hands, who expected this project to actually happen? I, for one, never expected this to see the light of day. DOOM and Ghostface Killah first mentioned working together way, way back in 2006, then released “Angelz” on DOOM’s 2009 LP, Born Like This. But their partnership seemed to vanish into thin air, and years passed with no word from this duo. But out of the blue, here’s “Victory Laps,” which debuted a few nights back on Peter Rosenberg’s Hot 97 show.

And somehow, despite having to live up to the hopes-and-dreams of fans across the country, it lives up to the hype. DOOM and Starks go for broke on the mic. Madlib and DOOM twist up a bit of soul up behind the boards. This joint could be five years old for all we know – Ghost’s Jake Plummer reference certainly dates it a bit – but it’s excellent, and finally real.

I mean, this is is worth it for the single Ghost adlib after DOOM rattles off “Bring rings around clowns / Got ‘em bowing down in surround sound drowned.” Y’all couldn’t see the wide smile that broke across my face when Tony Starks spoke up, but it was there, and hell, it’s still there a day later. Even after what passes for an eternity in this hip-hop world, it’s pretty damn cool to see these two guys link up.

And, as an added bonus, a CDQ version of this track is set to be released via iTunes on July 26th.
