Has-Lo’s already dropped In Case I Don’t Make It this year, and a “re-envisioning” of that album called Conversation B is set to drop November 15th. But, just in case that wasn’t enough for the ravenous listening public, the man dug through his hard drive to come up with Illegally Yours, a five-track EP made up of some odds-and-ends from throughout his career. It’s a bit more of that dusty boom-bap we’ve come to expect from Has-Lo, a little something to nod your head to for your Monday afternoon.
On my first listen this morning, the EP’s last track, “Live To Write,” stands out from the pack. The beat slaps, built around a racing, dramatic soul sample and a snare that hit me in the gut like a right hand, while Has-Lo and Mic King go for broke on the microphone. I mean, “You don’t got to be blind, though you don’t see/My eyes say it all but I’m hard to read / Still shine world, gonna lust this glare/Through these grey skies, the sun’s still there.” Damn. And then, the hook comes in just right, and the track rides to the end.
