Man, SL Jones just keeps it moving, doesn’t he? It wasn’t but two months ago when the Little Rock big dog dropped his knocking Flight Risk mixtape on us. Now, he’s apparently set to release a joint effort with DJ Burn One, called Paraphernalia. But, before fans can dig into that stash, Jonesy wants us to mix up the dirty Sprite and zone out to this Chopped & Screwed version of his inclusion on our Top 30 Mixtapes Of 2011, The Number 23. Before you get too leaned out, though, read as Audible Treats gives some background on the tape.

It’s no secret that SL Jones is a dedicated fan of screwed music; growing up in Little Rock, just a few short hours north of Texas, the budding rapper was raised on the original Screw tapes that made their way north up I-30. Screwed music has permeated his own music dating back to the release of his 2009 mixtape C.O.L.O.R.S., and now SL has teamed up with Atlanta’s DJ DiBiase to release The Number 23: S.L.A.B. Edition (Screwed x Chopped).

The tape, clocking in at 15 tracks, pulls from SL’s 2011 mixtape The Number 23, and includes fan favorites “Paper Cuts,” “Trapped Out” featuring Yo Gotti and Pill, and more. The true standout, though, is “Swervin’,” featuring Houston’s own Trae Tha Truth, with the two rappers trading bars over a drifiting piano loop that sounds right at home at its new slowed, crawling pace.

Obviously, the more menacing cuts are what will stand out, slowed-down. But, curiosity has us wondering how the hot, crossover records like “I’m Straight” and “Flier Learning” will end up sounding screwed. Guess we’ll just have to download and find out, huh?

Oh, and as added incentive to keep an eye for that Paraphernalia, take a few minutes to sit down and listen in to Burn One and SL speak on the new project with 3 Little Digs.
