We’re not really sure where this new Willie The Kid mixtape came from, but we’re pretty pleased about it. Oddly entitled Aquamarine and featuring some incredibly imaginative artwork, this full scale release delivers 13 new tracks, each of which delivers more of the 3D lyrical gangsterisms we’ve come to love from the unheralded Grand Rapids MC.
Despite lacing beats that sound like everything from trippy ballads (“Lost At Sea”) and easy listening Jazz (“Mainstream Freestyle”) to foreign beach tunes (“The Pleasantries”) and the theme music to Godfather IV (“Goodness Gracious”), WTK still blends every track together cohesively with the same unwavering lyrical bravado that made Drake a fan and has kept his name afloat for nearly a decade. The highlight, however, might just be “Glasses Of Water,” which samples a classic bit from a Fresh Prince episode old heads will recognize immediately. Yet, that’s exactly how diverse Willie’s direction is throughout the whole tape.
