Dynamite Announces ‘Swords Of Sorrow,’ An All-Female Pulp Character Crossover

The seedy world of pulp fiction tends to be dominated by male characters, but female pulp heroes certainly exist. They may not be quite as well-known as their male counterparts, but pulp heroines like Vampirella, Red Sonja and Jungle Girl have carved out their own niches, and have been growing in popularity in recent years.

Dynamite Comics looks to take advantage of the rising popularity of female pulp heroes with Swords of Sorrow, a new crossover event which features a pulpy, all female cast and will be penned by all female writers. Much like your typical DC or Marvel crossover event, there will be a core Swords of Sorrow miniseries written by Gail Simone, which will be supported by a variety of other spin-off titles.

The spin-off titles will include Vampirella, written by horror novelist Nancy A. Collins and a female-focused take on Green Hornet by G. Willow Wilson (Ms. Marvel) and Erica Schlutz (M3). Other writers working on the project include Marguerite Bennett (Earth 2, A-Force), Emma Beeby (Judge Dredd), Mairghread Scott (Windblade), Mikki Kendall, Leah Moore and maybe even some more.

Gail Simone had this to say about the project…

“I love pulp adventure, always have. But as male-dominated as comics have often been, the pulp adventure world seems to be even more so. Most of the big name stars and creators are dudes, and that’s fine, it’s great. But it hit me… what if that wasn’t the case? What if adventure pulps had also been written with female readers in mind, and awesome female characters in the spotlight?”

Swords of Sorrow kicks off in May. Personally I’m always up for more sexy pulp ladies kicking ass.
