A Recently Released Video Shows Mexican Drug Lord ‘El Chapo’ Escaping From His Cell

It’s been nearly four days since notorious drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman escaped from his cell at a maximum-security prison in Mexico. The discovery of an elaborate mile-long tunnel dug from under his shower has Mexican authorities baffled as to how he orchestrated the prison break. The only evidence of Guzman’s escape is the tunnel itself, and this recently released video that shows the moment he fled to freedom.

In the closed-circuit video, the drug kingpin is seen pacing his cell. On one lap, he ducks behind the wall of his shower, and then returns to his bed to sit and change his shoes. On the next, he returns to the shower, bends down behind the wall, and seemingly disappears. This is the point when he apparently enters the tunnel.

According to Mexican Interior Minister Miguel Ángel Osorio Chong, the cell was taped 24 hours a day, but provided blind spots next to the toilet and shower for privacy purposes. It doesn’t take finely-tuned detective skills to assume that Guzman was fully aware of this gross oversight. In addition to being monitored by cameras, he was also fitted with a tracking bracelet, which he somehow removed prior to entering the tunnel.

Due to their bang up jobs at not being able to keep tabs on their most important prisoner, the Interior Minister recently fired the prison’s director and other officials at the facility.

So, there you have it, one of the most dangerous criminals of our time escaped from prison like he was Andy Dufresne from The Shawshank Redemption.
