Chinese Farmer With No Hands Built His Own Bionic Replacements

Sun Jifa, a 51-year-old farmer in China, lost both of his hands while building a bomb to fish with (as one does). The accident was eight years ago, at which time the hospital quoted a price for prosthetic hands which was far higher than Sun could afford. Over the past eight years, Sun has been building his own bionic hands out of scrap metal and other cheap materials. The hands have wires and pulleys inside which Sun can control with his elbows.
He tells Metro, “I control them with movements from my elbows and I can work, love normally and feed myself just like anyone else. The only drawback is that steel is quite heavy so they’re tiring to wear and get hot or cold in the extremes of summer and winter.” I’m not sure what he meant by “love normally”, but dude, too much information.
Sun says he plans to develop his design for others who can’t afford expensive prosthetic bionic hands. Because it’s not enough that he built new hands from scratch while not having hands, now he’s going to help out others, too. He is cooler than us. If we lost our hands, we’d have probably spent that entire eight years just going to massage parlors. For completely legitimate massages, of course.
Below you’ll find seven more pictures of Sun’s bionic hands, and you can check out some more pictures over at Izismile.
