Let’s Revisit “Lost One” From Jay Z’s Worst Album

When Jay Z ranked his albums and placed Kingdom Come at the bottom of the list, I realized I hadn’t heard that LP since it came out in 2006. After Wikipedia-ing the tracklist, my eyes were immediately drawn to “Lost One.” How could I have forgotten about this insightful gem?

Produced by some guy named Dr. Dre, the relatively successful single found Jigga paired with the throwback stylings of singer Chrisette Michele, speaking on various blue birds who flew away from him in one way or another, for better or worse. Regarding the first verse, some felt Jay was addressing his situation with Dame Dash – which is clear as day, whether it’s a diss song or not. The last verse, on the other hand, is about his nephew and finds the rapper lamenting on his regret for buying the car he perished in.

Both scenarios are on completely opposite ends of the spectrum, but the way Jay tied them together to fit this concept reminds me why I knew half the words, despite having not heard the song in years.

So, while one song can’t save a whole album – especially one with “Show Me What You Got” as a featured single – this head-nodding track from Kingdom Come is one that should never be swept under the rug.
