If there’s one thing we believe in here at Uproxx, it’s that you deserve to be kept abreast of all the exciting developments that go down in the world of Tunisian soccer action. Okay, that’s not exactly true, but when a referee is shredded to pieces by a boisterous crowd, that’s when we tend to pop by.
A Christmas Eve clash between CA Bizertin (HOME OF THE COOLEST DOLPHIN BRANDING IN SPORTS!) and Marsa featured insults raining down on the match’s ref. It’s not exactly unusual for referees to be hammered with verbal abuse, but seeing one crying on the pitch over the nasty comments ranks as a rare occurrence. What was it that had the referee an emotional wreck? It was jabs aimed at the official’s mom.
The ref, who clearly comes from the Wes Mantooth school of revering their mom, offered up his take on why he started to weep.
“Hearing of such insults, it’s hard to hold back tears. No one likes to hear his mother insulted. God bless my mother!”
For their part, the players on the pitch seemed to respect the code of “c’mon dude, that’s my mama you’re talking about.” A gaggle of men from both teams tried their hand at consoling the upset official.
As Mr. T once taught us, when you put down one mother, you’re putting down mothers all over the world.
