Jerry Falwell Jr. Dropped A Silly ‘Yo Mama’ Joke At The Republican National Convention

We live in a world where Jerry Falwell Jr., the son of the famous Baptist pastor and political evangelical figure Jerry Falwell, includes a “yo mama” joke in his speech on the final night of the Republican National Convention. Yes, that’s right folks — the president of Liberty University, a private religious institution in Virginia where even Bernie Sanders spoke during the primaries, used a “yo mama” joke to criticize Hillary Clinton. He also lumped her, President Barack Obama, and Osama bin Laden into the same category.

“In the days before my father passed away in 2007, he joked with CNN that he dreamed… about the three greatest threats facing this nation,” Falwell Jr. quipped. “He [replied to Chelsea Clinton’s question], ‘Osama, Obama and yo mama.” Whether or not this interview between Falwell Sr. and Chelsea ever took place remains to be seen, but the joke scored the Trump supporter a few brownie points with the crowd in Cleveland.

As for non-Republican politicians, pundits, reporters, and Twitter trolls hidden away in Quicken Loans Arena or watching at home, the response to Falwell Jr.’s comedy debut was decidedly mixed. That is, it ranged from, “Did he really just tell a ‘yo mama’ joke?” to “Yes, he really did just tell a ‘yo mama’ joke.'”
