Jerry Seinfeld spoke at the upfronts for Crackle, and while he’s clearly a supporter of new media and streaming content — because that’s who will be broadcasting his just-renewed talk show, Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee — he didn’t have very kind words for the biggest outlet of online videos on the web, YouTube. Here are his comments (via the Daily Dot):
“The less the better. I don’t want to see this crap. We have a giant garbage can called YouTube for user-generated content. We’re trying to generate a little higher level. I think show business is for talent, that’s who should be in it. But let’s keep it in its hierarchy. And I like being at the top of the pyramid.”
Now, that might seem harsh, but consider that there are people on YouTube whom Seinfeld likes, such as Miranda Sings, the creation of YouTube comedian, Colleen Ballinger, who once appeared on Comedians. The vast majority of what’s found on YouTube, and even excluding the comments section, it’s like the nightclub conceived inside the most disturbing nightmares of Stefon from Saturday Night Live that even he wouldn’t go to.
So, I agree with Jerry on this one. YouTube is a garbage can. But once in a while, you might find something good, right at the top. Adjacent to the refuse.
