Joseph Gordon-Levitt Has An Update On ‘Sandman’

When we last heard about Sandman, Joseph Gordon-Levitt announced he was producing. And that was pretty much the end of it, although that didn’t stop some Hollywood gossips from announcing BS release dates. That said, an interview reveals some interesting tidbits.

Speaking with Moviefone, Gordon-Levitt got quizzed pretty relentlessly on Sandman, and despite talking around the situation, a few things are clear. The first being that we aren’t seeing it any time soon:

Right now we’re working on a script. It’s me and Goyer and the screenwriter and Neil Gaiman, as well as the good folks at DC and Warner Bros. It’s a really cool team of people. It’s a lot of the same people who worked on the Nolan “Batman” movies. It’s really exciting. There’s not a script yet, we’re still kind of working it out because it’s such a complicated adaptation…

Hey, at least you know the plot of every arc before you go in (we kid, we kid.) Just as interesting is the question of whether or not this is going to be a part of the big DC Cinematic Universe being rolled out over the next six years:

Have you talked about a “Sandman” universe?

It’s such a huge world. We’re definitely talking about in terms of a whole world.

Would you be down for tackling other aspects of this universe?

Who knows man?! I’m flattered you’re asking. But I can’t say anything committal.

That sounds a lot, to us, like Sandman won’t be part of any sort of shenanigans the Justice League is getting up to, and that’s kind of a relief. Vertigo has actually had a fairly strong showing in theaters, largely carrying the idea that comic books without superheroes could be made into movies, and it’s good to see that’s being respected.

That said, we hope they can crack the script. Otherwise, Dream’s probably going to be stuck in this particular bottle for a while.
