When Olympic Gymnast McKayla Maroney surfaced on social media last month, she looked remarkably different than most people remembered her. Which in itself is actually not that remarkable, since when Maroney went viral for “the face” during the 2012 Summer Olympics, she was just 16 years old, and now she’s at the ripe old age of 20. So congratulations, everybody, for being able to spot the difference between a teenage girl and a burgeoning young woman.
But some are suggesting that Maroney’s makeover isn’t just all part of the natural process of growing up, and that — gasp! — she may have had some surgical enhancements. Conspiracy theorists are specifically pointing to her lips, which once pulled so determinedly to the side in her trademark smirk, now appear plump and full, thanks to an image that popped up during Sunday’s telecast of the U.S. Women’s Gymnastic Olympic Trials and photos such as these.
