PoV: Michael Jordan Tells The NBA “I’m Back”

On November 7, 1993, a then-seven-year-old, misty-eyed version of myself placed a letter in the mailbox addressed to the Michael Jordan Fan Club I found in an issue of Sports Illustrated For Kids. All I wanted was for M.J. to comeback and make everything right again. At the time, it was the most heartfelt and passionate thing I ever mustered the courage to write. This was also because Michael Jordan retiring was the single greatest tragedy I had ever experienced in life up to that moment, too.

Sixteen months later – on March 18, 1995 – Michael Jordan somehow stumbled upon my letter, felt so moved by words and sprung to action with this simple fax. We know how this script eventually played itself out, so let’s just skip to the most important aspect of Mike’s first comeback.* I was .000000000000000000000001% of the reason you got “The Father’s Day Title” “The Hangover Game” and “The Final Shot.” You’re welcome, America.

You’re f*ckin’ welcome.

For good measure, here’s a clip of reports on MJ’s actual return to the court and the Chicago Bulls on Sunday 19 March 1995 in the (late) Market Square Arena of the Indiana Pacers.

* – Although, you know, seeing the ’95 Bulls vs. the ’95 Rockets would’ve been interesting. Too bad Nick Anderson had other plans. Karma eventually caught up to him a few weeks later if you see where I’m going with this.
