Things are hard out here for soul singers. Relying on true talent and arrangement can often get lost amid the layered over-production of more radio-friendly Hip-Hop and EDM landscapes. One of the acts that has been able to break through this glass ceiling is ‘explorative soul’ duo M&O (formerly Milo & Otis) out of Chicago who today teased their upcoming album, Almost Us, due out April 3, with a new song in “House”

M&O make the kind of music that seems best suited for daydreaming about a faraway lover, a distant crush, a fleeting feeling. The release date is almost perfectly in line with the overall feeling the records on the project evoke as the last bits of dark ice and cloudy grey skies make way for spring. Jamila Woods possesses one of the most intoxicating voices in the Midwest, let alone Chicago and fellow Brown University graduate Owen Hill is a constant in providing that voice a path from which to follow. Together, the pair make music that seems meant for a full band, layering their own sinewy vocals and crafty production in a creatively fresh aesthetic that goes beyond traditional bounds.

Jamila and Owen drop Almost Us with a release show at the Double Door in Chicago April 3.
