When was the last time you went on MySpace? Maybe it was ten years ago when you finally abandoned your Top 8 for Facebook, or perhaps it was just a few days ago and you wanted to find a picture of you during your emo phase for Throwback Thursday. Do you even remember your MySpace password? Well, whatever the case, most likely your MySpace was hacked and unlike the LinkedIn hack that occurred this month, the MySpace hack sadly went unnoticed for quite sometime despite the fact that over 427 million passwords have been stolen and is one of the largest database leaks ever recorded.
The Daily Dot stated that an individual who goes by the alias Tessa88 reported the hacking of the retro social media site to LeakedSource, which is a paid hacked data search engine. Tessa88 allegedly is not the hacker “but rather just a user who either happened upon or collected the data.”
MySpace were aware of the hack, yet they didn’t let their users know that their personal information had been compromised. Sure, we can make jokes about MySpace all day long, but there’s still some decent activity on there (It’s not Xanga). The decrepit social media platform gets about 50 million unique users per month (We’re surprised by that figure, too), so this hack is a pretty big deal. Maybe you do remember your MySpace password, because it’s been the same password you have used for everything since you signed up for AOL back in the 1990s, and maybe you still use the same email address too despite the fact that you’re in your 30s sending professional emails from ‘BSB4LYFE’. For the most part, we’re online creatures of habit. According to the Consumerist some most popular MySpace passwords are the extremely unique “password1”, “abc123”, “123456”, and everyone’s favorite, “f*ckyou1”.
