NFL, Jealous Of Third Party Profits, Considers Super Bowl Ticket Price Increase To Match Resale Market

The Wall Street Journal reports the NFL is considering a plan that more than doubles the cost of the club and mezzanine level seats for Super Bowl XLVIII at MetLife Stadium and increases the price of lower bowl seats by more than 50% over Super Bowl XLVII. In a quote to the New York Post, NFL spokesperson Brian McCarthy stated the ticket increase would be in part to “close the gap between the face value of the ticket and its true value as reflected on the secondary market.”

It’s not all bad news for ticket pricing though. The number of tickets distributed through the general lottery will double to 1000 and will be priced $100 less than they were last season for the privilege of sitting in the upper corners of the stadium, although in an interesting twist, these tickets will not be given to buyers until game day. In the stadium. And fans cannot return to the parking lot and hand them off to someone else. Clever.

The league is also framing the price increase as a way for (corporate) ticket buyers to save money, what with the game being in New York near where they are located since most (corporate) buyers are in New York and the rest of us live on the the part of the map that reads ‘BEWARE: DRAGONS BE HERE’, so (corporate) fans won’t have to waste money on hotel rooms and other travel necessities. (Except for the part where it’s unseemly to have boondoggle parties in your living room in Paramus and not the Plaza.)

Torn. Hate the idea of the pie-in-sky dream where I’m buying Super Bowl tickets at face value and they cost more, but after meeting with two different ticket brokers at Super Bowl XLV in Dallas and seeing them each holding stacks of tickets the size of my head, wouldn’t mind seeing those guys getting screwed by market forces either.
