Nicki Minaj – “Dear Old Nicki”

A debut album, above all things, should introduce an artist to the masses.  Because for every barbie that’s been along for the ride since day one, there’s someone like me who didn’t catch on until much later. Someone whose interests are piqued whenever she turns up with a scene-stealing guest verse, only to be let down when she takes center stage. I’m really not even mad at her for chasing that crossover appeal. Hell, Eve & Missy both gradually made that move over the course of their careers. The only difference is they provided an album or two to appeal to their base audience first. For that reason, I can’t help but look at Nicki Minaj and feel like she skipped a step to get where she’s at.

Apparently, on some level she feels the same way. Putting her split personalities to good use on “Dear Old Nicki,” Minaj has a heart-to-heart with herself on the topic of staying true to her roots & mainstream aspirations. By now, it’s obvious to see who won this time around. Perhaps next time “Old Nicki” will get a little more shine.
