With the infrequency of his hits, forgetting Timbaland is such a stud behind the boards is easy. Yet, when you hear a song random as Nicole Wray’s 1998 hit “Make It Hot,” Timbo’s talent shines bright enough to slap some senses into your ears. Combining one of his patented mouth-made instruments with a bubbling bassline and haunting harp plucks, the prowling production on this title track from Wray’s debut album brought the best out of Missy Elliot’s forgotten protege and delivered a sleek R&B/rap single that was both successful and unexpected for the time period.

Fifteen years later, the track still stands out amongst most – new and old – and is a prime example of how the man behind Justin Timberlake’s success has always been more than a one-trick pony.
