What happened to Oscar Grant four years ago will forever be a black eye on the United States justice system. His beanie-clad picture has become the symbol for police brutality and excessive force.

And living the Bay Area, just six stops away from the real Fruitvale Station, I’ve seen the very same station trashed on more than one occasion. Countless shards of glass scattered on the floor, threatening graffiti along the brink walls, and mobs of angry protesters. I’ve seen it all with my own two eyes. The scariest thing about the whole incident was the realization that it just as easily could have been you, me, or anybody else.

Thank to Johannes Mehserle’s “mistake” New Year’s day 2009 left mother without her child and a daughter without a father. It was only a matter of time before a film detailing Oscar Grant’s tragic murder came to light. Enter Fruitvale Station. Created by Oakland native Ryan Coogler and named after the train station where Grant was shot, the film will depict his life and the events that took place prior to his untimely demise. Thus far the acclaim has been pouring in so far, and it’ll hit the big screen July 16.
