Psy’s ‘Gangnam Style’ Is Somehow Still Incredibly Popular, Four Years On

This might not surprise you if you’ve been to a wedding in the last year, but Psy’s “Gangnam Style” is still really, really ridiculously popular. The once inescapable viral hit still manages to rack up more than 3 million views every single day.

According to Forbes, the clip pulled in 22.3 million viewers in the week of July 8-July 14, handily beating more recent videos like Fergie’s comeback single “M.I.L.F.$” and Justin Bieber’s “Sorry”. “Gangnam Style” was the first YouTube video to reach 1 billion views and remains the most-watched video in the history of the site. The current hit count stands at 2.6 billion and nothing else comes close. Even Psy’s follow-up single “Gentleman” only pulled in a paltry 975 million views.

Perhaps surprisingly, the single never hit number one in the U.S. (though it did in almost every other country). This was before the rules were changed to include video streams — and before another viral sensation, Baauer‘s “Harlem Shake,” became the first to reap the benefits — otherwise we likely would have seen a Drake-like dominance of the charts for the better part of a year.

According to Forbes calculations, the video alone has generated $2.5 million in revenue (and that’s before you factor in sales, touring, and pistachio money).
