Should Ricky Gervais Have Deleted This Tweet Responding To Caitlyn Jenner?

During Sunday evening’s Golden Globes, host Ricky Gervais told a number of jokes designed to offend the well-dressed audience. He told some pretty perfect gems and an occasional jaw dropper. One joke revolved around Caitlyn Jenner and could have (arguably) been considered too much:

“I’ve changed. Not as much as Bruce Jenner, obviously. Now Caitlyn Jenner, of course. What a year she’s had. She became a role model for trans people everywhere, showing great bravery in breaking down barriers and destroying stereotypes. She didn’t do a lot for women drivers, but you can’t have everything, can ya?”

Well, Gervais was mostly calling out Jenner’s fatal car accident that left one person dead. Jenner wasn’t charged with manslaughter (as was speculated), but LA investigators determined she was inattentively driving. Gervais disguised his commentary as a jab at how Bruce was a better driver than Caitlyn. The joke wasn’t very funny, but Gervais stood by it on Twitter:

On Thursday evening, Jenner delivered a response at the Television Critics Association. She made her feelings pretty clear on the subject, and Jenner brushed aside hurt feelings by offering herself up as a Globes host:

“On Ricky, I think what I’m going to do is call the Golden Globes and see if they need a new host for next year. We’ll solve that problem … As far as all of the criticism, I do see it. It is tough.”

Then on Friday morning, Gervais tweeted and deleted this remark, which called Jenner a “sacred cow.” This could have been interpreted in many ways, but none of the outcomes appear worse than Gervais’ usual brand of humor.

Why did Gervais delete his joke? He followed up with a replacement, which once again skewered Jenner’s womanly driving.
