Rob Ryan’s Hair Cited As Reason He Doesn’t Get Head Coaching Jobs

Before this season, Rob Ryan had bounced around several teams as defensive coordinator with varying levels of success, but it was his job reviving a terrible Saints defense this year that had some speculating whether Rob, like brother Rex, could be an NFL head coach. Apparently not, but not because of his credentials or because he hits the bars or lives in his Econoline van. Nope, it’s apparently because he had long hair, according to Chris Mortensen.

Appearing on ESPN’s NFL Insiders Monday, Chris Mortensen reported Saints DC Rob Ryan’s long hair is considered an impediment to landing a head-coaching job. Mort’s report is via “several NFL executives,” including an owner.

It’s Mort, so it must be taken with a heavy load of skepticism. At the same time, NFL front offices are just fusty enough to make it believable. At the same time, if Rob did get a haircut, he’d look just like fat Rex. It’d be like a flashback to 2009.
