Was Robert Kardashian Jealous Over This Fitness Infomercial Starring Bruce And Kris Jenner?

This newly unearthed account may shed some light into how Robert Kardashian is being portrayed in American Crime Story. Of all of the numerous Kardashian references in the series so far, David Schwimmer’s “we are Kardashians” speech admonishing the trappings of fame seemed to lay it on especially thick. But that wink may have dug a little deeper, because if this passage in Jeffrey Toobin’s The Run of His Life (the book on which the series is based) is true, then as it turns out, Robert Kardashian may have actually been super jealous of ex-wife Kris Jenner’s relationship with Bruce (now Caitlyn) Jenner.

See, even back then in the early ’90s, Kris was already positioning herself as the fame-hungry “momager” she would eventually turn out to be, starring alongside Jenner in one particular infomercial that apparently drew Kardashian’s ire.

Kardashian’s divorce from Kristen pained him, especially because she left him for Bruce Jenner, the former Olympic decathlon champion. Jenner and Kristen later married, and at the time of the murders they were starring in a frequently played infomercial for a thigh-exercising device. According to a close associate of Kardashian’s, “It bothered him that she was on TV all the time with the Thighmaster. This case was his way to step over them. This was better than infomercials.”

Yes, being involved in the high-profile murder case gripping the nation involving your best friend being accused of murdering his wife and her companion would ostensibly be “better than infomercials.” The Wrap tried to track down the Thighmaster spot in question, but the closest they came was the above Stair Climber Plus ad, which means that either the source got the specific infomercial wrong or (likely) the couple starred in more than one.

Either way, it’s a fascinating glimpse into the mindset of Robert Kardashian, and hopefully one that will be explored a bit further in the series.
