Romeo The Dog Has Been Rescued After 9 Days Trapped In Italian Earthquake Rubble

The magnitude 6.1 earthquake in Italy has left over 300 dead, thousands of homes destroyed and hundreds injured. It will be years until Italy has fully recovered, and some may forever feel the effects of this horror, but there are some stories that can still warm the heart.

Romeo, a golden retriever, was thought lost by his owner. Nine days later, firefighters and Romeo’s owner were working to retrieve some of his belongings when they heard Romeo barking under the rubble — somehow the pupper was alive and well.

Working diligently, the firefighters were able to pull Romeo from the destruction. In the video by CBS News, you can hear his owner quietly say “Romeo” as the dog emerges. Then you can see firefighters immediately start to give the happy Romeo some water. With his tail wagging, Romeo wiggles free from the concerned rescue team to get some well-deserved sniffs in before getting a plethora of hugs and pets.

Judging by pictures circulating online, Romeo looks tired but healthy.

While humans found this dog, most canines have been working diligently to help rescue humans. Mashable reports that various hero dogs have been instrumental in helping find lost children in the aftermath of the quake.
