Selena Gomez is having a rough time, y’all. After a concert in Jakarta, Indonesia where the “Come and Get It” singer seemed to be on the verge of tears, she posted a message to Instagram where she said she felt unconnected to her own music and is looking to “rethink some areas of my life”.
“Tonight I felt extremely inauthentic, unconnected to both myself and my music. I’ve never really felt like my materials, wardrobe or a video could define me.” she wrote. “I’m always true to my word, I’ve shown who I am but I need to rethink some areas of my life creatively and personally.”
The post came after a concert in which Gomez was clearly upset. She told the crowd that she “gets stupid sometimes” before asking for understanding and love to triumph over anger. One fan posted a video of her speech to Twitter.

Gomez could be reacting to any number of things: the backlash she received for belittling the #BlacksLivesMatter hashtag, the rough year she’s already had or (given the comments on anger), the ascension of one Donald J. Trump. On that last note, she wouldn’t be the first musician to publicly wig out a bit.
Father John Misty gave a speech on evil in place of his set at a Camden festival on July 22, and questioned the role of entertainment in a world where Trump is marching toward the presidency.
