As a kid growing up in the early 90’s, I knew three things:
- Chip and Pepper was THE label to wear.
- Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: The Secret of the Ooze was an acceptable sequel.
- Sega Genesis was superior to Super Nintendo in basically every way.
Few issues led to as many fights amongst kids as the 1990s battle between Sega’s console, the Genesis (sleek, black, came with a game about a snail built in) and Nintendo’s Super Nintendo system (boxy, ugly, cool reset flip-switch though). Author Blake Harris has created a book about this gaming war titled “Console Wars: Sega, Nintendo and the Battle that Defined a Generation“, and even though it’s not set to be released until August of this year its movie rights have already been picked up by Sony Pictures and Producer Scott Rudin (No Country For Old Men, The Social Network), who have brought in Seth Rogen and his writing partner Evan Goldberg to write and direct the script.
Long before Playstation vs. Xbox was a thing, Genesis vs. SNES was the industry’s biggest competition:
Blake Harris draws on hundreds of interviews to present the first full account of this titanic corporate battle, which transformed computer games into a global industry that last year recorded sales of $50 billion (surpassing the film and music businesses combined).
Harris will serve as an Executive Producer on the project. Hopefully this doesn’t lead to a delay in Rogen and Goldberg’s adaptation of Preacher, but even if it does this sounds awesome. But who will play what characters? Will Bob Hoskins return to play Mario? Will they dig up the corpse of Raul Julia to play M. Bison? Will they talk about Sonic’s legendary coke habit? Will Paul Rudd wear the same blazer he wore in his 1991 commercial? So many questions.
To set the stage, have a look at Complex’s 100 Best Super Nintendo games list and their 100 Best Sega Genesis games list. It is infuriating. Beyond Oasis rated higher than NHL 1994? Heresy!
