GammaSquad Review: Taking The Trip To Bespin In ‘Star Wars: Battlefront’ Is Worth The Risk

Months after the Outer Rim DLC, Battlefront is back with a new injection of Star Cards, levels, heroes and much-needed gameplay tweaks in the Bespin DLC. This bundle of Star Wars joy is a little more focused than Outer Rim, which featured some of Jabba’s iconic hallways to traverse but also some soulless and unneeded levels that failed to make an impression. In Bespin, every level can be pointed to as a keeper of an “I remember that!” moment. From Cloud City’s hallways were Chewie and a busted C-3PO ran around looking for Han, to the legendary carbon freezing chamber, that looks exactly how it did in The Empire Strikes Back.

First off, the levels look beautiful. They truly belong among the clouds. The Bespin DLC is a much needed aesthetic change from the relatively gritty war zones we’ve been blasting through since Battlefront’s launch. The city itself is gorgeous, and the clean environments juxtapose against the myriad explosions going off left and right. We get pretty much every gameplay mode from the base game here, with Walker Assault across the city being the only one that doesn’t really fit in the city’s somewhat tight quarters.

The new game mode is Sabotage, which has attackers attempting to arm three explosives around the city while defenders try to thwart their efforts. Once all three are armed and detonated, the attackers have to escape by holding the evacuation area. It’s a lot of fun, and full of heroes blasting away with their backs to the wall. It’s also the best way to get your Trait card to level 3.

Unlike Outer Rim, we actually have a Fighter Squadron map in this DLC, and flying around Cloud City is the best experience yet for those who play Battlefront for the dog fights Even though it’s only one map, this might be worth the entry fee alone — it’s that much fun. It’s also the onlyFighter Squadron map entirely in a (perceived) space battle that has no limits on where you can fly. The other Fighter Squadron maps were all hampered by being set far too close to the ground. Here, you have the ebb and flow of battle above and below you rather than just along the horizon. It’s incredibly welcome. I love it.

The two new heroes are Lando Calrissian and Dengar the bounty hunter. While it’s cool to have Lando running around, Dengar highlights the fact that the Star Wars universe has a bad guy problem. Beyond Darth Vader and the Emperor, there’s really no one but a bunch of faceless goons to blast. Boba Fett may be an icon, but he still only has a few lines. Still, he can get a pass. So we get Greedo, someone who dies like a chump letting Han get the jump on him after 3-4 lines, and Dengar, who leans against a wall for ten seconds in Empire. These are your bad guys? Gameplay-wise, both heroes are pretty straight-ahead DPS, with Dengar able to destroy foes at close range with ease, while Lando smoothly runs things from a distance.

Hopefully, they fix some glaring bugs, or this will be the shortest offensive of all time. Dengar is overpowered, there’s a bug that’s not allowing people to join games after they’ve completely loaded in (which is a nightmare with these loading times). A patch is rolling out soon to fix some of the issues, but it’s still disappointing, considering the lengths which EA went to update the UI and partnering system, which has made Battlefront a much better game.

If you have the Battlefront season pass, you’re probably playing Bespin and enjoying it. If you’re someone who skipped Outer Rim and is thinking about getting the Season Pass, you may want to skip it unless you really want to fall into a sarlacc pit. Dice splits up its community more and more with each release, and while the main game still has plenty of games going, it’s nearly impossible to find a game in the Outer Rim DLC. So if you’re a fan of Lando, Cloud City and Fighter Squadron, this is worth the 10 bucks.
