‘Star Wars Rebels’: Star Wars Gets Animated Again in 2014

One of the unfortunate side effects of Disney’s purchase of Lucasfilm was the cancellation of The Clone Wars cartoon series, which had been running on Cartoon Network in one form or another since 2003. Really, The Clone Wars was pretty much the best thing coming out under the Star Wars banner for nearly a decade, and it will be missed by a good chunk of fans.

But hey, did you really expect there wouldn’t be a new Star Wars cartoon series now that Disney owns the franchise? Come on. Hit the jump for information on the upcoming animated series, Star Wars Rebels

Star Wars Rebels, a new CGI cartoon series produced in-house at Lucasfilm, will start airing on Disney XD in 2014. The series will take place in the very fertile ground between Star Wars Episode III and Episode IV. Here’s a short synopsis…

“The Empire is securing its grip on the galaxy and hunting down the last of the Jedi Knights as a fledgling rebellion against the Empire is taking shape.”

Hmmm, could we be getting young, animated Han, Leia and the rest? You know, to balance the sad, old versions we’ll be getting in the sequel trilogy?

There will be some quality creative talent behind Star Wars Rebels — the show will be produced by Dave Filoni of The Clone Wars and Avatar: The Last Airbender (the good cartoon series, not the M. Night Shyamalan movie), Simon Kinberg, writer of X-Men: First Class and Greg Weisman, former producer of Gargoyles. Hell yeah.

So yeah — you’re still not excused for shutting down LucasArts Disney, but this sounds fun.
