Stephen King may specialize in writing horror-themed fiction, but the thought of a Donald Trump presidency may scare him even more. The author, along with 600 other U.S. writers, have signed an open letter that adamantly opposes the thought of having Trump in office.

The letter, which was published by @WritersOnTrump Tuesday morning by creators Andrew Altschul and Mark Sloukaand, is featured on Literary Hub and as an online petition. Addressing the American public, the beginning of the letter reads:

“As writers, we are particularly aware of the many ways that language can be abused in the name of power; Because we believe that any democracy worthy of the name rests on pluralism, welcomes principled disagreement, and achieves consensus through reasoned debate; Because American history, despite periods of nativism and bigotry, has from the first been a grand experiment in bringing people of different backgrounds together, not pitting them against one another.”

It ends with the writers detailing their “unequivocal opposition” to the candidacy of Trump as president. Amongst the long list of signees includes the signatures of 10 Pulitzer Prize winning authors.

The petition is now closing in on 4,000 signatures and is hoping to reach a goal of 10,000. A few of the other authors who have signed are Junot Diaz, Amy Tan, Tobias Wolff, and Roy Blount, Jr. The campaign is gaining traction on Twitter as well.

Back in February, King told the Daily Beast that he thought Trump would be more electable over Ted Cruz. Now that the option may actually be a real possibility, the author may have gone back to his original feelings on Trump, which he tweeted in December of last year.
