If Breaking Bad has taught us anything, it’s that you can cook meth virtually anywhere. In a strange example of life imitating art, two men were arrested outside an Iowa Taco Bell for allegedly cooking methamphetamine inside the restaurant.
Cedar Rapids Police received a call early Tuesday morning regarding suspicious activity at a local Taco Bell. Upon arrival, two men were found outside the building, Kent Duby, and Chris Matous (sadly, no one named Jesse or Walter). One of the suspects told police they were an employee, while the other denied working there (officials won’t say which of the men were employed at the location). The cops then called the store’s manager, who in turn asked the officers to check the restaurant to see if it was okay. Upon entering the building, officials found the remnants of a meth lab laid out before them. YIKES.
Both men were arrested and charged with conspiracy to manufacture methamphetamine. Additionally, Matous received a charge for possession of meth and ingredients to make the drug.
Taco Bell, wanting to be known only for cooking bargain-priced Mexican food (as opposed to meth), released the following statement:
“We understand that two people, one an employee, entered our franchisee’s restaurant illegally, allegedly possessing suspicious items. Both we and our franchisee find this completely unacceptable. Our franchisee has been cooperating with Cedar Rapids Police to investigate this isolated incident. Although the suspicious items found in the restaurant were not used in the kitchen, the employee has been terminated and our franchisee is considering pressing criminal charges. The restaurant will reopen after it has been sanitized inspected by the Health Department.”
While some people are addicted to eating at Taco Bell, the food there still has a long way to go before it’s considered an illegal substance.
